I wouldn’t be looking to get a laptop if I could continue to use the Dell from work. As far as purchasing power goes, I’m finishing a project right now (http://rlsinvestment.com) that should pay for the portion of the laptop that the sale of my tablet won’t cover.

Also, I can’t invest the couple grand I have available and wait for the interest to build to the point where I can purchase a laptop with it… that would take years.

No…but it would be senseless to buy a laptop now seen as though you are using currently using a Dell. I would invest the money (in certificate of deposit, stock market, REAL ESTATE) then when you can’t use the Dell anymore, use the interest earned from the investment towards the purchase of a new laptop. This way you can keep the principal invested and use still use capital towards the purchase of more and more laptops down the road.
